Roleplaying History Games in the Age of Misinformation

Fulton School of Liberal Arts
2/25 Conway 179; 2/26 GSU Wicomico
Saturday, Feb 26, 2022 at 8:00 AM (ET) to Saturday, Feb 26, 2022 at 6:00 PM (ET)

Today, more than ever, political ideologies are shifting perspectives and interpretations about history, and historians have a responsibility to engage in these difficult, but necessary, conversations.

Scholarship-based roleplaying allows students to understand the nuances of historical research with hands-on experience. Historian Kyle Lincoln, Oakland (MI) University, leads a two-day event for students, faculty, and local educators to learn firsthand how games can bolster student learning in a manner that is interactive, engaging and creative.

We will meet on Friday, February 25, 5-6 m. for a lecture on the use of Reacting to the Past games to dispel common misconceptions about medieval history, which have often fueled white supremacist claims.

On Saturday, February 26, 8 a.m.-6 p.m., the speaker will lead a workshop that will include roleplaying a microgame in the morning ad discussing concrete ways of incorporating games into courses in the afternoon. [Priority will be given to SU Faculty & Students and local educators. Please register by February 15, 2022.]

Organized by the SU chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the national History honor society, in collaboration with the History Department and the Fulton School of Liberal Arts.
